4 Chinese Takeaway Dishes That Aren't Your Old Favourite

Blog

Do you enjoy treating yourself to a Chinese takeaway but tend to stick to the same dish every time you order? You're not alone, but you're missing out on some delicious taste experiences. Popular dishes, such as chicken curry, sweet and sour chicken and pork-fried rice, hit the spot, but next time you order from your local takeaway, give one of these dishes a try:

Choy Sum In Oyster sauce

Choy sum is a green leafy vegetable that's similar to bok choy, but it has thicker stems and delicate flower tips that provide a satisfying crunch. Choy sum in oyster sauce is a rich, hearty dish that combines the strong umami flavour profile of oyster sauce with fragrant garlic and sesame oil. Enjoy this dish with steamed rice and a garnish of crispy fried onions.

Braised Chicken With Plum Sauce

Braised chicken with plum sauce will satisfy your craving for something slightly sweet and has a moreish acidic undertone. Chicken breast or thigh meat is braised with onion and garlic before being coated in a slightly sticky sauce made with fresh plums, ginger, sugar, soy sauce and rice wine vinegar. The dish is then cooked slowly until the chicken is tender, and it's served with fresh greens and boiled rice.

Prawn Foo Yung

Foo yung is a soft scrambled egg dish that's served over fried rice. It consists of beaten eggs mixed with vegetables, such as bean sprouts, peppers and spring onions, and it is seasoned with soy sauce and black pepper. King prawns are typically used for prawn foo yung dishes, and they add a meaty texture to the dish, which balances out the soft texture of the egg.

Tofu With Stir-Fried Vegetables

This tofu dish is suitable for vegans and combines sautéed firm tofu with fresh peppers, mushrooms, spring onions and greens. The tofu and vegetables are served in a sauce consisting of sesame oil, soy sauce, red chilli flakes, ginger and garlic. This dish can be enjoyed with noodles or steamed rice.

These are just a few examples of the often overlooked dishes that are available at most Chinese food takeaways. Next time you find yourself in the mood for a takeaway, look past your old favourites and try something new. If you're unsure of what to order, ask your server to recommend a dish and have fun taking a leap of faith and trying a dish you wouldn't normally order yourself.
